Personality
A product of the Jazz Age, Jordan Baker is a young woman living a life of perpetual dichotomies. Raised with wealth and few restrictions, she is expert at traversing the waters of the aristocracy, a cool, cynical figure who has no real comprehension of her own privilege. She is also, however, a woman well before her time, intensely frustrated with the those same class and gender-based restrictions that frame her entitlement. Unsatisfied with the traditional idea of female identity, Jordan chose a career as an athlete over a family, and a life of travel and parties over children. Fitzgerald named Jordan after two different car companies, and for her times she is "fast," both in the more derogatory sense and as a representative of the new, modern woman of the age.

The unfortunate reality for Jordan, however, is that being a truly forward-thinking and acting woman requires a talent for manipulation, lest she find herself cut off from the few things in life she actually values. She appears to toe the moral line, but in reality she often does precisely what she pleases, and her rebellious streak is both broad and meticulously maintained as she finds new and creative ways to work around the rules. She despises careless people despite acknowledging that she herself is sometimes one, as they present too much uncertainty in a world she prefers to maintain full control of.

Despite this, Jordan is not an inherently dishonest person—On the contrary, she's often the most bluntly honest one in the room, as long as it's about anyone but herself. She's also not a bad friend, although her aloof nature make genuine attachments hard to come by. For those who bother to see the full picture and legitimately understand her, Jordan is a complex and compelling woman, intelligent and self-sufficient—But very few get that far, even those who claim to care for her.

Appearance
Much is made by Fitzgerald of Jordan and her "jaunty" body. Far from the delicate flower personified in her best friend, Jordan is the racy girl implied by her automobile-inspired name. She's taller than even most men, but moves with cool confidence, never slouching or hunching to make herself appear smaller. It is a rare moment that Jordan is anything but self-possessed, as she's been lying for so long that even genuine shock or irritation tends to register as mild and indifferent.

Meticulously well-dressed and groomed at all times, Jordan tends to wear the latest (and occasionally controversial) fashions. Women in pants is still unusual, but she's been in them for years. Nick remarked that Jordan wore all of her clothes like sports clothes, even her evening gowns, implying again that she appears fully at ease regardless of what she has on.

As of June 2014, Jordan has open and unlimited access to the hotel's sex switch door, and will be using it freely as it suits her. Despite being in a male body, she will still consider herself fundamentally female and will refer to herself as such. All of the above points still apply, and although Jordan will take full advantage of wearing mens clothing—Smart suits in particular—she will read as somewhat effeminate in her movement and bearing and give the general impression of a dandy with her carefully-styled hair, clean-shaven face, and scrupulous fashion choices.

She was incurably dishonest.

She wasn't able to endure being at a disadvantage and, given this unwillingness, I suppose she had begun dealing in subterfuges when she was very young in order to keep that cool, insolent smile turned to the world and yet satisfy the demands of her hard, jaunty body.
