Jordan Baker The Great Gatsby AGE: 21 HOMETOWN: Louisville, KY OCCUPATION: Golfer NEXUS RM#: The Magnolia Suite (3rd Floor) PB: Elizabeth Debicki / George Blagden HAIR: Dark brown, bobbed EYES: Bright blue HEIGHT: 6'3" COMPLEXION: Caucasian, tanned A product of the Jazz Age, Jordan Baker is a young woman living a life of perpetual dichotomies. Raised with wealth and few restrictions, she is expert at traversing the waters of the aristocracy, a cool, cynical figure who has no real comprehension of her own privilege. She is also, however, a woman well before her time, intensely frustrated with the those same class and gender-based restrictions that frame her entitlement. Unsatisfied with the traditional idea of female identity, Jordan chose a career as an athlete over a family, and a life of travel and parties over children. Fitzgerald named Jordan after two different car companies, and for her times she is "fast," both in the more derogatory sense and as a representative of the new, modern woman of the age. The unfortunate reality for Jordan, however, is that being a truly forward-thinking and acting woman requires a talent for manipulation, lest she find herself cut off from the few things in life she actually values. She appears to toe the moral line, but in reality she often does precisely what she pleases, and her rebellious streak is both broad and meticulously maintained as she finds new and creative ways to work around the rules. She despises careless people despite acknowledging that she herself is sometimes one, as they present too much uncertainty in a world she prefers to maintain full control of. Despite this, Jordan is not an inherently dishonest person—On the contrary, she's often the most bluntly honest one in the room, as long as it's about anyone but herself. She's also not a bad friend, although her aloof nature make genuine attachments hard to come by. For those who bother to see the full picture and legitimately understand her, Jordan is a complex and compelling woman, intelligent and self-sufficient—But very few get that far, even those who claim to care for her. Appearance Much is made by Fitzgerald of Jordan and her "jaunty" body. Far from the delicate flower personified in her best friend, Jordan is the racy girl implied by her automobile-inspired name. She's taller than even most men, but moves with cool confidence, never slouching or hunching to make herself appear smaller. It is a rare moment that Jordan is anything but self-possessed, as she's been lying for so long that even genuine shock or irritation tends to register as mild and indifferent. Meticulously well-dressed and groomed at all times, Jordan tends to wear the latest (and occasionally controversial) fashions. Women in pants is still unusual, but she's been in them for years. Nick remarked that Jordan wore all of her clothes like sports clothes, even her evening gowns, implying again that she appears fully at ease regardless of what she has on. As of June 2014, Jordan has open and unlimited access to the hotel's sex switch door, and will be using it freely as it suits her. Despite being in a male body, she will still consider herself fundamentally female and will refer to herself as such. All of the above points still apply, and although Jordan will take full advantage of wearing mens clothing—Smart suits in particular—she will read as somewhat effeminate in her movement and bearing and give the general impression of a dandy with her carefully-styled hair, clean-shaven face, and scrupulous fashion choices. |
The evening had begun on a sour note. In retrospect, Jordan supposed that she and Erik both ought to have known well enough by that point that when the universe gives you such a clear signal to stay in, it's wise to take heed. Being themselves, however, and possessing an innate fondness for (and superiority over) large parties, they neatly made their own beds with a bit of soda water and a hair dryer.
"There," Jordan said, dryer in hand as she stepped back across the bathroom tile to give Erik's suit jacket a discerning once-over. "I can't even tell." The wet spot on her own jacket was lower, and as she turned the heat on herself, she watched in the mirror, the slender boy holding the dryer as familiar now as the body she had been born with.
"I don't know how in the hell we both managed to be so damned clumsy, honestly," she said.

She's got enough, she's got too much.
Sep. 2nd, 2014 11:10 amHow many times had Jordan, as a girl, marveled at what it must be like to be a man? The very idea of it had fairly made her head swim, a seeming endless parade of raucous freedoms that were always just out of her grasp for having the audacity to be born female. It had chafed, and eventually she had learned well enough how to turn that friction into a more creative means for grasping freedom, but never was she foolish enough to think it would ever be the same. There was nothing about her gentle or sweet, and yet still she was the gentler sex, placed neatly within a box from which a lifelong battle would never extract her.
Or so she had believed. The hotel, apparently, had other ideas about these things.
Weeks she had gone now almost entirely as a man, and she was finding it suited her rather well. Not enough to remain as such forever, as there were certain aspects of being female which suited her even better, but the alternate version of her was still as sleek and tall and aloof as the other, but with a different assortment of accessories.
All these weeks, and she'd not run across Gatsby until now, a good deal of her time spend gadding about with Erik. For once, she'd nearly–Not entirely, but nearly–forgotten about Daisy's wayward lover and all of the burdensome weight which accompanied his mere presence.
Cutting an elegant figure on the lawn in her neatly tailored suit, she gazed over at Gatsby from behind the wavering smoke of her cigarette, and wondered for the first conscious time whether Nick might have showed her a scrap more loyalty had she looked like this when they'd made love. The thought was bitter, and she quickly swallowed it down with a scowl.

CHARACTER CANON: The Great Gatsby
Slowtagging: Yes. Expect it.
Canon-puncturing: Not just now.
Offensive subjects (elaborate): I'm open to discussion about it.
Hugging this character: Likely to be met with disdain.
Kissing this character: Ironically, an impulsive kiss would likely be better-received than a hug, because then Jordan would at least admire the kisser's courage. However, making a habit of it won't go over well.
Flirting with this character: Bring it on.
Fighting with this character: Difficult to do, considering the wall of apathy that goes up when Jordan is faced with conflict. You're welcome to try.
Injuring this character (include limits and severity): I'd rather not.
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: This is fine.
Jay Gatsby - Intuition-based assumptions on Jordan's emotional development, minor interaction based on the current state of their relationship, and the current state of said relationship.
Erik Lehnsherr - Shared outings that haven't been played out but could have occurred, and assumptions about the absolute divinity of their friendship.
